2010 Changes in Soybean Coverage

Beginning this year, specialty soybeans are insured by type in Iowa, Arkansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, and Ohio for APH, RA and CRC plans. Contract soybeans may be insured at a different price election and plan. Your production history could be improved if you can separate production for specialty types, such as large food grade or high protein, produced in the past.

Another change for 2010 is the addition of broadcasting soybeans as a non-conventional soybeans practice in some Iowa counties. The soybeans must be planted in a two-step operation in which the seed is first broadcast using a boom-type spreader and is then incorporated into the soil at the proper depth in a timely manner. Broadcasting soybeans using an airplane, helicopter, end-gate seeder, fan-type seeder, etc., is not insurable under this practice.

If you plant specialty type soybeans or if you broadcast soybeans, call a Farm Credit Services of America crop insurance specialist at 1-800-884-FARM to learn more about the changes and to plan your coverage for 2010.
