Only 4 Percent of Beans to Go

Jul 07, 2015

USDA reports 96 percent of the planned soybeans in the 18 main states planted by July 5. A look at state totals shows none with more than 6 percent left to plant to except Missouri, where farmers have seeded only 73 percent against an average of 97 percent by now. Iowa and Illinois each have 94 percent planted, 5 points behind average. At 99 percent, Nebraska is only 1 percentage point behind average, and South Dakota farmers have finished planting.

Added rain this week will hamper further progress in some areas, but in practical terms, outside of Missouri, acreage has run out of steam as a price driver. In addition to northwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas, problem spots exist in southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Keep in mind the Farm Service Agency (FSA) acreage reporting deadline - July 15 - is a little more than a week away. FSA offices are getting booked up, and crop insurance agents can be a big help to producers in preparation ahead of their appointment.

Soybean emergence is somewhat more erratic, with a greater number of states lagging their averages. Missouri is again the farthest behind, with just 60 percent up (average 93 percent). Kansas stands at 83 percent and Kentucky at 87 percent (versus averages of 95 and 91 percent, respectively). Ninety-five percent of Nebraska’s beans have broken ground (average 100 percent) and at 99 percent, South Dakota is right on its average. A similar story applies to blooming.

Soybean condition has not changed from last week, with the 18 states at 63 percent good/very good and 9 percent poor/very poor.

Corn condition ticked one point better in the good category, bringing good/very good to 69 percent; poor/very poor remain at 8 percent. In the states served by Farm Credit Services of America, the crops overall are in good shape:
