Thank you for visiting the Board Elections page. The 2024 elections have concluded.

Directors are elected annually on a staggered basis. Nominating Committee members are elected to a one-year term annually. Candidates elected in this election will begin their terms on April 1, 2024.

Eligible voters as of December 15, 2023, will be mailed ballots on February 27, 2024, and may vote online or by mail.

 WHY I WANT TO SERVE ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:

Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) has been my primary lender for many years. The advice from loan officers has been pertinent, timely and accurate. We have been able to steadily grow our farming and cattle feeding operation over the years because of access to capital and sound advisement from our local team. My background includes teaching vocational agriculture after graduating college, and I have always had a strong interest in keeping talented young people involved in agriculture. I am very interested in the current issues involving agriculture and hope to impact our industry when needed.

EXAMPLE OF A LEADERSHIP ROLE THAT PREPARED ME FOR A POSITION ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
I was elected to the original board of Green Plains Renewable Energy (GPRE). As a board, we were able to take a broad idea of building an ethanol plant, then actually built two of them. My role was that of the local farmer. Since much of the board did not have extensive agriculture backgrounds, it fell on me to explain the farming process. For a few years we raised money, gave presentations, and dealt with the challenges that building a large ethanol plant and company entail. Since my time on the board, GPRE has grown to the fourth largest ethanol producer.

BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

Strategic Planning: GPRE started the process of building an ethanol company from scratch in a small, rented board room in Shenandoah, Iowa. Vision was paramount, as we were heading into unknown territory regarding markets and marketing. The study of basis was key and something that has stayed with me. After our local plant was built, we greatly expanded our cattle feeding in anticipation of nearby byproducts. Our farm is multigenerational, and we have utilized estate planning to pass the farms on. I am the beneficiary of my parents’ good planning and hope to do the same for my family.

Corporate Governance: I have been involved in this process since purchasing our first stock. I recall attending meetings when a competitor proposed a takeover. The Board listened to all sides and eventually voted. I was impressed with the process. FCSAmerica is in a strong position due to the foresight of this and previous Boards. Future FCSAmerica Boards have a fiduciary duty to uphold this strong position for its members.

Financial Reporting: Meeting with the accountant and lender can be overwhelming. For us, the financial part is easier when we stay current and the data is accurate. The better prepared, the better our decisions are. I am sure this is true regardless of business size. Thinking back to my teaching days, I remember when we were just introducing computers and how my grandfather ’s ledgers from the early 1900s were a testament to the need for good accounting.

Business Technology: My first class teaching vocational agriculture several decades ago was farm accounting. We used PcMars farm accounting software, which was cutting edge at the time. Today, our farm operation uses QuickBooks® and a feedlot monitoring program that utilizes an iPad to record weights as cattle are fed. The program transmits the data to the cloud so it can be viewed in real time by our clients, not just when I send them a bill. FCSAmerica has done a good job making new products available and ensuring the customer has adequate support afterward.

Risk Management: Anyone involved in feeding cattle has experienced risk management. Hedging feeder cattle, feed and market cattle are all part of our daily business. The addition of insurance like livestock risk protection has made it easier to manage risk. Our crop operation regularly uses forward contracts, hedge to arrive and average pricing to minimize risk. I am not sure how a lender minimizes risk hedging interest rates, but I would like to learn.

Talent Management: I think FCSAmerica has done a terrific job identifying and hiring new talent. In our area, it seems they have gathered the best and retained them. As a farmer, we do not deal with hiring as much as some industries, but in our case, my first hired man stayed with us 15 years before he retired, and he still helps at harvest. His replacement has been here for nine years and says he will not leave. Identifying talent and putting them in the right position seems to be the winning formula.

WHY I WANT TO SERVE ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:

My life’s work and passion are in agriculture. My goals continue to be promoting family farming and seeing Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) keep its cooperative system with competitive rates. Serving on the FCSAmerica Board has allowed me the opportunity to work with a variety of farmers across the country to promote agriculture and initiate programs assisting young and beginning farmers. I would be honored to continue to represent our members and to provide low-cost financing and patronage for our farms, ranches and businesses.

EXAMPLE OF A LEADERSHIP ROLE THAT PREPARED ME FOR A POSITION ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
I have served on the FCSAmerica Board for several years. I have also served on the FCSAmerica Board Business Risk, Audit and Governance Committees during my tenure. At a local level, I have aided my community as head elder at our parish, president of a hog feeding co-op, and served on several other committees and boards. My leadership skills have been further improved by active participation in PGS training offered by FCCS.

BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

Strategic Planning: As a farmer, I evaluate commodity prices, interest rates, and current events to plan for our crop and livestock enterprises each year. Strategic planning is necessary to keep the farm and FCSAmerica focused for the future. I have participated in the FCSAmerica annual planning sessions, where long-term planning is crucial for our ongoing success.

Corporate Governance: My previous experience serving on the FCSAmerica Board Governance Committee, as well as attending PGS training, taught me the importance of monitoring the actions of the co-op and enforcing the accountability of those actions. Directors are part of the team-based culture that must set financial goals, then create a plan to achieve those goals.

Financial Reporting: The integrity and accuracy in financial reporting is critical in monitoring the performance of our organization and in maintaining the trust of FCSAmerica customer stockholders. I have completed the FCSAmerica media, political and Audit Committee training, and I am a current member of the FCSAmerica Board Audit Committee.

Business Technology: The use of technology on the farm is increasingly vital to the agricultural community and to FCSAmerica. We currently use technology to receive our Board materials and all financial information before each meeting. Internet, email and texting are services that I use daily to connect to online banking, weather reports, agricultural news and markets. Technology is also extremely valuable in our farming operations. We use GPS, yield mapping, grid sampling, variable rate planting and variable rate fertilizer applications. We continue to adapt our operations to be compatible with cutting-edge technology.

Risk Management: I am a previous member of the FCSAmerica Board’s Business Risk Committee. My past experiences in agriculture have taught me about balance sheet management, business risk and legal issues in agriculture. The FCSAmerica Board has implemented a risk management system that leverages technology to make it a stronger organization. FCSAmerica supports its customers’ risk management capacity through crop insurance strategies, innovative financial management tools and flexible loan products.

Talent Management: People are our most valuable resource, both in the field and at FCSAmerica. In PGS human capital training, it was reinforced that as Directors, we must create a rewarding culture that provides opportunities for executive leadership and employees to improve and develop their skills. In providing this culture, we can obtain and retain the highest quality executive leadership and employees.

WHY I WANT TO SERVE ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:

We became customers of Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) two decades ago. At that time, I was very impressed with the exceptional service we received and the staff’s knowledge and expertise. A few years later, I served on the FCSAmerica Nominating Committee and was further exposed to its outstanding culture. These experiences made me realize I wanted to be more than a customer and become a part of this organization. I was elected to the FCSAmerica Board the following year. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve on this Board. I would welcome the opportunity to support agriculture by continuing to serve on the FCSAmerica Board.

EXAMPLE OF A LEADERSHIP ROLE THAT PREPARED ME FOR A POSITION ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
I am currently the board chair of FCCS and previously served as the chair of the FCSAmerica Board. I have held other board leadership positions and have participated in leadership training through the PGS program. I have held leadership roles in my community and am currently the treasurer of our church and K-8 school. My experience in human resources and internal auditing in the banking industry also helped prepare me for a position on the FCSAmerica Board.

BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

Strategic Planning: Strategic planning is an ongoing process on our farm. We evaluate opportunities based on their ability to help us be efficient and profitable now and in the long term. Examples of this include enhancing grain handling facilities, incorporating new technologies, upgrading equipment and utilizing various marketing strategies. As a board member, I am actively involved in the strategic planning process and believe this is one of the most important functions of a successful board.

Corporate Governance: I have served on several nonprofit boards and committees in our community. Being elected to the FCSAmerica Board has really helped me understand how a strong board functions. I currently serve on the FCSAmerica Board Governance Committee. The other boards I serve on in the Farm Credit System have strengthened my expertise in governance, as has as my experience chairing the FCSAmerica Board and Board Committee meetings. I have been fortunate to be a part of strong boards where very active strategic discussion is welcomed and encouraged.

Financial Reporting: I have prepared various financial reports while working as the internal auditor for a financial institution. I currently prepare the financial information for our farm operation as well as for the board I serve on as treasurer. In my previous role as the FCSAmerica Board Audit Committee chair, I assisted in reviewing and certifying the quarterly financial statements and the annual report for FCSAmerica. I currently serve on the FCC and FCCS audit committees and assist in reviewing the financial reports and yearly audits.

Business Technology: We utilize a variety of business technologies to increase the efficiency of our farming operation. We recently upgraded to an online cloud-based bookkeeping system and utilize technology for almost every area of our business. We built a farm office, which has helped us further enhance our focus on precision agriculture. New technologies come our way every day, and we evaluate which ones will fit and benefit our operation.

Risk Management: We employ different strategies on the farm to manage our risk, and we are continually monitoring and evaluating these strategies. This includes a diverse marketing plan, appropriate insurance products, and on-farm storage for grain, fertilizer and seed. As an FCSAmerica Director, I am involved in our enterprise risk management process and participate in our annual risk assessment that helps set the risk profile and appetite for FCSAmerica.

Talent Management: I previously worked at a financial institution as their human resources manager. I interviewed, hired and managed entry-level employees, and oversaw payroll and other human resource functions. In our farming operation, I oversee the compensation and scheduling of our employees. I have gained additional human resource experience as a member of the FCSAmerica Board Human Capital Committee. I was also the Search Committee Chair when the Association Boards hired our current President and CEO.

WHY I WANT TO SERVE ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:

Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) is the premier lender in agriculture, and access to credit is critical. With forward-looking ideas, FCSAmerica will be able to serve farmers and ranchers of all ages for generations. I believe my experiences have prepared me to serve on the Board of Directors.

EXAMPLE OF A LEADERSHIP ROLE THAT PREPARED ME FOR A POSITION ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
My leadership positions taught me how to prioritize within a given budget, develop a consensus and drive long-term growth. I am President of K & K Farms, and part owner of Supreme Pork and Supreme Welding. I serve on various local boards, and I am a past board member of three state commodity boards (South Dakota Soybean Association, South Dakota Corn Utilization Council and South Dakota Pork Producers) and a Market Development Action team member of the National Corn Growers Association.

BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

Strategic Planning: Strategic planning is critical for forward-looking businesses. I have been in several planning sessions where vision and defining goals give leadership direction. My wife and I review and update our succession plan yearly for K & K Farms. I am also involved with the strategic planning of Supreme Pork and Supreme Welding to ensure our businesses stay competitive. During my tenure on the South Dakota Pork Producers Council, I participated in a strategic planning session to determine priorities for the next five years.

Corporate Governance: Present and future patrons of FCSAmerica demand honesty and integrity of the Board, while they hold management accountable for the oversight of the business plan. My experience on boards (church, local and state) and our farm has given me knowledge related to corporate governance. I believe much of corporate governance comes down to managing finances in a transparent manner.

Financial Reporting: Accurate financials are of utmost importance to any business. I have been involved with creating a budget for our farm and other organizations, including being treasurer for the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council. I am responsible for the accounting, analysis and financial needs of our operation using QuickBooks®. In our farm and hog businesses, we use spreadsheets to know our break-evens.

Business Technology: We endorse new technology, whether it is for accounting purposes or technology in the field. Technology enables me to make real-time decisions and streamline my operations. We use Climate FieldViewTM to track yields by variety and field. Combined with QuickBooks, we know our costs. Our hog operation uses a detailed spreadsheet. We update it daily to track our profits and losses. I use the FCSAmerica app and website often for check deposits and balances.

Risk Management: Risk management is an important part of success in farming and ranching. FCSAmerica has several tools to help us manage risks. We use all available tools to market hogs and crops, while we track profitability daily. Working in the crop and livestock side of farming has given me experience with risk management. Balancing investments with the risk involved is important as I look to grow my farming operation for future generations.

Talent Management: Running my own farming operations and serving on state commodity boards have given me experience with talent management. As part owner of Supreme Pork and Supreme Welding, I participate in hiring company leaders and the performance reviews of all employees, when we must balance employee compensation with our business’s budget. Throughout my tenure on three commodity boards, I have been involved in the performance reviews of the executive officers. I am also involved in hiring the employees of K & K Farms.

My wife and I started ranching with a cow-calf commercial herd. We have increased our business to include our son and his wife, and formed Miller ’s Crow Creek Ranch LLC. Our crops are raised for livestock feed and we also background feeder cattle.

WHY I WANT TO SERVE ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:

I want to serve and give back both to the agriculture community and Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica). We have been customers of FCSAmerica for several decades. My past Director terms have been a great opportunity for education, enhancing leadership skills and gaining a better understanding of the lending industry. I want to continue serving to ensure reliable credit and a strong patronage program for present and future customers. I want to support our local communities and customers during challenging times and to be ready to change and adapt to whatever may lie head.

EXAMPLE OF A LEADERSHIP ROLE THAT PREPARED ME FOR A POSITION ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
My experience in training includes PGS, an excellent board leadership program to prepare me as a Director for FCSAmerica. I have gained education and insight serving on the FCSAmerica Board’s Business Risk, Human Capital, Governance and Audit Committees. I have also served on the Butte Electric board as a member and chairperson.

BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

Strategic Planning: Strategic planning is a priority at FCSAmerica and our ranch business. I completed the PGS strategic planning training, and I am involved with both short- and long-term planning as a member of the FCSAmerica Board and Butte Electric Cooperative board. In our ranching business, we use futures, forward contracting livestock and estate planning, which all add strategic value. I sat on many local and state committees where strategic planning was the focus, adding value for our customers and the organizations.

Corporate Governance: I have served on the FCSAmerica Board Governance Committee. Through my long tenure on the Butte Electric Cooperative board, I have dealt with governance issues pertaining to directors, staff and members. Further, being an original trustee of the Spearfish Rural Fire Protection District, I helped establish all governance issues pertaining to that new entity. I believe that the success of corporate governance is very simple: honesty, integrity and transparency.

Financial Reporting: Accurate financial reporting is critical to any business, whether it be at FCSAmerica or a personal business. It maintains trust between the Board of Directors, staff and customers. Currently serving on the FCSAmerica Board Audit Committee, I have tremendous insight into the financial position of our organization. I attended the National Director Conference, focusing on financial reporting for our Audit Committee. In my tenure with the Butte Electric board, I review monthly annual long-term financial planning. I have also received National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Director Certification, which is weighted heavily on organizational performance and financial reporting.

Business Technology: FCSAmerica’s large investment in technology is paying off big rewards. In our personal business, we use several different types of technology to advance our ranching business, such as drones, remote video cameras, and video auctions, as well as financial and tax reporting. I receive annual technology training through FCSAmerica and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

Risk Management: Serving on the FCSAmerica Board Business Risk Committee has given me vast knowledge of the potential risks FCSAmerica faces as a lender. It is our obligation to help our customers mitigate as much risk as possible. I have taken risk management training through PGS and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. In our personal business, we use several tools to manage risk.

Talent Management: By serving on the FCSAmerica Board Human Capital Committee, I understand the importance of having people in a role that suits them, then giving them the opportunity to thrive in that role. We must provide a positive culture and work environment to retain our employees, as they are one of our most valuable resources. I completed training through PGS and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association on human capital and talent management.

My wife and I operate a corn and soybean row crop operation with my family, and we independently raise hogs. We sell a small percentage of our production locally and offer some custom farming services to supplement the row crop operation. Previously, I worked for Kissack Water & Oil as a bookkeeper. I spent several months on receivables, then became responsible for the payables, along with some of the personal books. I also have a VitaFerm®, a beef cattle mineral business, that allows me to travel and visit other ranchers and discuss their day-to-day operations. I am the only dealer for this mineral in northeast Wyoming.

WHY I WANT TO SERVE ON THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE:
I would like to be part of the Nominating Committee because I have used Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) for several decades in the ranching business my husband and I own. FCSAmerica has helped us grow from beginner ranchers to a very successful operation. I bring years of agriculture experience to the table that would benefit sourcing the qualified candidates for the stockholder elections. I have the time and knowledge required to work with other committee members to make qualified judgments on behalf of FCSAmerica’s stockholders.
